After a few weeks of voicemails, I was finally able to secure an interview with the honorary consul to Sweden and it was an incredible experience. Secondary research had been helpful thus far but now that I have primary research it provides a more in-depth perspective and a better perspective of the work every kind of diplomat does. The consul herself was able to give me great insight not only on my original work but also new ideas for where to direct my secondary research moving forward. The biggest takeaway I got from this interview was that the actions of diplomats are supposed to reflect the goals of each state, which means that for my work, while it is supposed to define something for all countries, has to maintain some ambiguity in order to not heavily interfere with the goals of each state department. Now I think the best things to do are to look more into the Dedman Law Library which should have some great sources to move forward with and fully develop my original work. Moving forward in primary research, the thing I need to focus on it working with consular generals and other consuls to make sure that I have getting an accurate reflection of diplomatic affairs.
